This week we are discussing Integrating Biophilic Design for Wellness in Interiors.
We are true believers that our environment has a great impact on how we show up in the world. There are just certain spaces and places we visit that leave us feeling our best.
Don’t you always feel more relaxed, present, and productive after spending time in nature?
So, how do you incorporate those positive post-nature-infused feelings into Interior Design to increase well-being?
Let’s discover how Integrating Biophilic Design for Wellness in Interiors does just that.
What is Biophilic Design?
Biophilic design is the integration of the natural environment within the built environment and focuses on connecting people with nature.
This is achieved through literal means by incorporating plants in space and through spatial design such as finishes and architectural elements.
So why is biophilic design important?
The average person spends 87% of their time inside buildings, 6% inside vehicles, and only 7% outdoors. That means by the time you are age 40 most of us will have spent 36 years indoors.
Pretty wild right? Our modern lives have shifted the way we live, we are more disconnected from our natural environment than ever before.
This disconnection can have negative impacts on our overall wellness, mood, and productivity.
Humans have evolved in a natural world for much of history, so it is biological that we have a dependence and affinity for nature.
Elements of Biophilic Design
Biophilic Design is based on the following six elements:
Environmental Features
Environmental Features is about incorporating natural elements into the built environment. Incorporate this element by adding plants, water features, and sunlight as well as adequate ventilation.
Natural Shapes and Forms
To incorporate the element of Natural Shapes and Forms think of mimicking the shapes of the natural world. Think of trees, leaves, animal motifs, and organic shapes that mimic the flow of nature.
Natural Patterns and Processes
Natural Patterns and Processes is about simulating the senses that are engaged in our natural environment. Incorporate this element through lighting, sounds, pathway circulation, and focal points.
Light and Space
This element is about incorporating Light and Space as we perceive it in nature. This can be through natural light, reflected light, diffused light, and shadows. Consider incorporating elements of openness, connection, diversity, and harmony.
Place-Based Relationships
Place-based relationships are about the connection between buildings and the geographical environment. Think of incorporating native geographical materials, local landscape features, and cultural elements.
Humans have a strong connection with place. When we get homesick or miss certain places it is usually certain geographical or cultural elements that we are longing for.
Evolved Human-Nature Relationships
Evolved Human- Nature relationships are based on the very basic aspects of what nature gives to us and what it means to us. Think of incorporating the ideas and feelings of exploration, metamorphosis, security, and refuge into the built environment.
Benefits of Biophilic Design for Wellness
So, what are the benefits of Biophilic Design?
Studies have shown that the incorporation of plants and foliage in an interior results in reduced mental fatigue and increased productivity.
A space with abundant natural light will boost the occupant’s vitamin D levels and productivity as well as counteract seasonal depression.
The presence of water increases feelings of tranquility resulting in lower heart rate and blood pressure.
Incorporating natural materials reduces exposure to chemicals found in many modern construction materials.
Generally, Biophilic Design is more sustainable and environmentally friendly due to the incorporation of natural materials.
Researchers have also discovered that hospital patients with a view of nature tend to recover quicker than other patients.
The positive impacts of integrating Biophilic Design can be incredible.
Biophilic Design Challenges
So, what are the benefits if you just incorporate one or two of the six elements outlined above?
Although incorporating plants or water features will have some positive impact, you will get the most benefit from considering all Biophilic Design elements at the onset of a project.
This means that all elements should be considered at the start of a design and not just incorporated as an afterthought.
A holistic approach that incorporates most elements outlined above will result in the most benefit.
This leads to another challenge, the cost associated with integrating this approach.
Biophilic Design is an investment. You will need to value the positive impacts.
Unsure if this is the right approach for your project? Not sure it is worth it? Visit spaces utilizing this approach and see how they make you feel.
We are much more productive and uplifted in spaces designed with Biophilic Design elements incorporated. It truly makes a difference.
