Today we are exploring classic ceiling light fixtures. When it comes to lighting, a great fixture is more than just a source of illumination—it’s a statement piece that can transform a space and define its ambiance.
In this post, we’re spotlighting five classic ceiling light fixtures that have stood the test of time, each with a unique story and design philosophy.
From the mid-century modern classics of George Nelson to the contemporary simplicity of Michael Anastassiades, these lights represent the best of innovation, style, and craftsmanship. Let’s dive in!
1. Nelson Bubble Saucer Suspension
Designer: George Nelson
Brand: Herman Miller
The Nelson Bubble Saucer Suspension Light is not only a functional lighting fixture but also a piece of art that embodies the spirit of mid-century modern design.
George Nelson was an influential figure in American design during the mid-20th century. He was the Design Director for the Herman Miller furniture company from 1947 to 1972, where he played a significant role in popularizing modernist design in the United States.
The fixture is part of the Bubble Lamp series, which Nelson designed in 1952. These lamps are characterized by their sculptural, organic forms and use of innovative materials. The saucer-shaped design of the suspension light features a translucent, white plastic shell encasing a steel wire frame.
The Nelson Bubble Lamp series includes various shapes and sizes, such as the saucer, cigar, ball, apple, and pear designs.
We have used and will continue to use these classic ceiling light fixtures. The iconic design is timeless and the variations in size and shape are versatile to suit many applications.
2. PH5 Pendant Light
Designer: Poul Henningsen
Brand: Louis Poulsen
The Louis Poulsen PH 5 suspension light is a classic and iconic design in the lighting world, celebrated for its distinctive shape and innovative approach to light distribution.
The PH 5 light was designed by Poul Henningsen, a Danish designer and architect, in 1958. Henningsen is renowned for his extensive work with lighting and commitment to creating fixtures that provide soft, diffused, and glare-free illumination.
The fixture features a unique, layered structure with five distinct shades. These shades work together to control the direction and intensity of light, ensuring a soft and pleasant glow.
The PH 5 suspension light is often considered one of the most recognizable lighting designs and remains a key product in the Louis Poulsen catalogue. It’s one of our favourite classic ceiling light fixtures.
3. IC Lights Suspension
Designer: Michael Anastassiades
Brand: Flos
The IC Lights Suspension series, designed by Anastassiades for Flos in 2014, was inspired by the fluidity and balance of a contact juggler’s performance. Anastassiades observed the seemingly effortless way a contact juggler moved a sphere across his arms and shoulders, giving the illusion of perfect balance.
This concept is embodied in the fixture, the glass orb sphere appears delicately balanced, creating a sense of simplicity and equilibrium.
The IC Lights series has gained significant popularity due to its elegant and refined design. The balance and simplicity of the lights have made them a designer favourite.
We love the versatility of this classic ceiling light fixture. It is a showstopper on its own or with multiple together.
“I don’t consider myself an artist or a designer – even though I was trained as such — but simply a creative person.”
– Michael Anastassiades –
4. Serge Mouille Ceiling Lamp
Designer: Serge Mouille
Brand: Serge Mouille studio
Serge Mouille was an influential French designer whose lighting designs became iconic in the mid-20th century. He was trained as a silversmith but later focused on designing light fixtures that emphasized minimalism and functionality.
Mouille’s lighting designs are known for their minimalist and organic shapes, often inspired by natural forms like leaves or insect wings. He sought to create lighting fixtures that were both practical and aesthetically pleasing. His designs often feature adjustable arms and articulated joints, allowing for flexibility and adaptability.
Serge Mouille’s ceiling lamps have become highly sought after, not only for their functionality but also for their artistic qualities. The unique shapes and minimalist approach have made them popular in modern and contemporary interiors, where they serve as both lighting fixtures and sculptural art pieces.
Due to the popularity of Serge Mouille’s designs, there are many reproductions and replicas on the market. However, authentic pieces are still manufactured by the Serge Mouille studio, which maintains the original design and production techniques. The original pieces exemplify craftsmanship and historical significance.
5. Model 172 Suspension
Designer: Poul Christiansen

The 172 Pendant Light is recognized for its complex, spiral-like pattern, created through a unique folding technique. The intricate pleating produces a captivating interplay of light and shadow, giving the pendant light a dynamic and sculptural appearance. The design has a certain organic quality that resembles natural forms like shells or flowers.
The fixture has become a modern classic, embodying the Danish design tradition of simplicity, craftsmanship, and functionality. It is part of Le Klint’s broader legacy, which dates to the early 20th century and is known for its innovative pleated lampshades. Christiansen’s design is a continuation of this tradition but with a contemporary and innovative approach.
