Happy New Year! We hope you and yours had a wonderful holiday season. At Lyndsay Bragg Design we are all about how your space feels which brings us to the topic of today’s post, home décor ideas to create a calming and cozy space.
We took a day to do the annual post-holiday décor takedown and clean. Although it is so nice to step into the new year in a clean space doesn’t it always feel a little sad? I always miss the calming and cozy holiday ambience and feel like something is missing.
That got me thinking about how you can create that feeling in your home all year long.
Today I will walk you through home décor ideas to create a calming and cozy space that you can enjoy all year, holidays or not!
Intentional & Curated Home Accessories
First things first with this one, Marie Kondo your home.
You must surround yourself with items that bring you joy.
It’s so tempting to keep heirlooms out of guilt, but the tea is, if it doesn’t make you feel good then why is it in your home?
“Letting go is even more important than adding.”
– Marie Kondo –
In this mass-consuming world, you must decide what is enough for you. More is not more when it comes to accessories.
When you truly love each item or accessory you are surrounded by you will feel calmer and uplifted.
Intentional and curated accessories that are paired down will inherently instill a feeling of calm.
Layered Lighting to Create Ambience
One of the most calming and cozy pieces of holiday home décor is Christmas lights. It is the one we miss the most once it is put away for the season.
Who says that you can’t incorporate that feeling all year?
Layering lighting contributes to the overall ambience of the space and creates that calming and cozy feeling you crave.
If you are in the process of renovating or looking to make some improvements in the future, don’t underestimate the power of layered lighting.
We always incorporate multiple sources of light in our projects.
In our traditional kitchen project, we utilized multiple light sources including under-cabinet, in-cabinet, recessed lighting, semi-flush mounts, and pendants.
This gives you the utmost control to create the vibe and ambience you are after.
Feeling cozy? Maybe it’s just the pendant, under-cabinet, and in-cabinet lights you turn on.
We also always include dimmer switches wherever possible so you can control the light levels even further.
Looking for simpler and cost-effective ways to create a calming ambience?
Layer in table or floor lamps in addition to overhead lighting to give you more ambience.
As a finishing touch, we love adding battery-powered or real candles to our spaces. We also love incorporating a string of battery-powered lights added to plants or accessories.
Incorporating layered lighting is the perfect home décor idea to create a calming and cozy space.
Comfortable Furniture
Maybe this one is a bit obvious, but how can you be calm and cozy if you’re uncomfortable?
It is tempting to select furniture purely on aesthetics but how things look is not always how they feel.
We purchase so many things online now because it is easy and accessible. It can be tempting to purchase an investment, even as big as furniture, without seeing it in person.
Don’t make the mistake of not sitting on the furniture you are ordering.
You will likely be disappointed.
This is your home, and you will be sitting on this piece for years to come. It needs to feel supportive and comfortable.
Take the time to see it in person and do a sit test. That extra bit of time will pay off for years because while using the piece you will feel so much more at ease and comfortable.
Incorporating comfortable furniture pieces will naturally contribute to a calming and cozy space.
Incorporate Personal Memories
Have you noticed how looking at a photo of a joyful memory naturally makes you feel good?
This could be different for everyone. Maybe it’s pictures of your loved ones, travels, or accomplishments.
Or maybe it is a meaningful object brought back from an amazing trip.
Incorporate those meaningful personal items and showcase them front and center.
Looking at them will feel like being wrapped in a warm blanket or a loving hug.
Incorporating personal memories is a simple but impactful home décor idea to create a calming and cozy space.
Function
It is hard to feel calm and cozy in a space that simply doesn’t do what you need it to.
Maybe your Kitchen is separated from the rest of your home and entertaining or watching your kids is frustrating and unachievable.
I think we have said it before 😉 but our environment shapes not only our well-being but also our productivity, mood, and overall quality of life.
A space that functions well for you will actively contribute to the betterment of your life.
What does it look like to have a space that functions for you?
An open-concept floor plan that allows you to greet your guests, prepare a meal, keep an eye on your kids, and entertain all at the same time.
“Form follows function – that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union”
– Frank Lloyd Wright –
Maybe lipstick is no longer working and it’s time to tackle that reno.
Getting closer to a calm and cozy space is also about getting real about what is not working for you.
