Here we are again a month away from a fresh and shiny New Year. We always love this time of year as it is the perfect time to reflect on great memories and make grand plans for the upcoming year including discovering, and getting excited about, your favourite 2024 Interior Design Trend.
Maybe 2024 is finally the year that you will tackle that major reno or maybe you are just looking for some simple ways to update your space and make it feel more like you.
In today’s post, we are exploring and looking ahead to 2024 interior design trends. We always enjoy seeing what is on the design horizon and we can confirm that this year we are pumped about the opportunities that the following trends invite.
We hope this post inspires you and gets you excited about whatever project, big or small, is on your list. Let’s dive in!
Character
Copy and paste design is no more, which is music to a designer’s ears! Although we love seeing inspirational photos and using those to help guide the concept and look and feel of a design, we do not believe in dissecting and copying every detail.
This copy-and-paste approach overlooks one critical consideration, you, and your family’s unique personalities and how you live and use your space (in reality). An all-white interior is stunning, but it isn’t necessarily the best move for a family with young children or pets.
Most importantly that beautiful, clean, white inspiration image might not fully represent who you and your family are.
This 2024 interior design trend is about moving away from standard and safe and embracing interiors that ooze personality and reflect you. In 2024 we are on a mission to:
Incorporate antiques and unique one-of-a-kind pieces
Antiques are a unique and beautiful touch to any space and are also so much fun to shop for. We love mixing in a few of these treasures to add a vintage layer that juxtaposes other contemporary pieces in our designs.
Include textures that embrace imperfections
We have always loved incorporating hand-made textures like beautiful undulating tiles as they add interest to a space with each unique piece. Rustic woods and finishes that patina over time add so much personality making the space feel personal and unique.
Embrace whimsy and playfulness
We love wallpaper as it is a simple, no-construction-involved way to add personality to a space. In 2024 we will be reaching for fun and bold patterns that represent our clients’ personalities to liven up our designs.
Accessories are another great option as they are a low-commitment way to add a layer of whimsy to your space. In 2024 we will be sourcing fun pieces that don’t take themselves too seriously to make our clients smile.
This 2024 interior design trend has us excited! We love how incorporating character through one-of-a-kind pieces, including imperfect textures, and embracing whimsy and playfulness creates one-of-a-kind spaces that fully represent our clients.
A bonus? Saying yes to whimsical and playful elements in your space will not only bring joy but will also spark conversation.
The overall message here? Perfection is boring! In 2024 we will be embracing imperfection with open arms.
Sustainability
This is front of mind for us and many other designers and is an important area of focus considering the impacts of climate change and a record-breaking season of heat and wildfires in Canada.
This is not a 2024 interior design trend; I repeat not a trend but must be mentioned to help make a difference.
It’s a designer’s responsibility to help their clients make responsible choices and it is possible for you to incorporate them in your DIY projects as well. Here’s how:
Think long-term investments
Although saving a few dollars is initially tempting, you are often replacing those pieces sooner. Investing in a quality product from the start will give you both longevity and peace of mind reliability.
Choose pieces that are manufactured locally
There are many beautiful locally-made products, just ask your vendor or supplier to point you toward products that are manufactured locally. Less distance to ship products + utilizing local resources + supporting the local economy = win-win-win.
Ask questions, get educated, and know more about the products you are saying yes to
Any product you are including in your project will have specification information that will give you more insight into how it is manufactured and how it will behave in your home once installed. Check the specifications or ask your vendor for low-VOC, safely manufactured products.
These simple shifts will not only benefit the environment but will positively impact you by instilling confidence and peace of mind that your home is a healthy and safe space for you and your family.
It may not be financially feasible for you to go entirely green with your project, but we are believers that even one responsible and informed choice makes a difference.
Mixing Warm & Cool Tones
For a long time, there was a misconception about this design “rule”. Many people believe that you either incorporate all cool tones or all warm tones in a space and mixing the two is a design no. We are here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing which is why we are so excited about this 2024 interior design trend. Here’s why we love it:
A mixture of warm and cool adds depth and dimension
We love a good tone-on-tone moment but there is no denying that the contrast created between warm and cool tones adds more dimension to a space by emphasizing the shapes, textures, and elements within a design.
Mixing warm & cool tones makes those wow finishes or pieces stand out
The additional contrast between warm and cool tones emphasizes those beautiful, stand-out finishes or pieces. The beautiful quartzite countertop and marble backsplash featured below wouldn’t have popped without the warmer tones of the surrounding cabinetry and wall colour.
Mixing warm & cool tones creates balance
An all-grey interior can feel sterile and impersonal while a space with an overload of creamy undertones can feel builder-grade and dated. Incorporating both warm and cool tones breaks the space up and creates a balance of new modern and welcoming warmth.
We are here to permit you to break the rules and so does this 2024 interior design trend. Incorporating both warm and cool tones creates dimension, adds balance, and emphasizes beautiful finishes and pieces. We hope this has inspired you to give it a try too!
2024 Interior Design Trend Wrap-Up
Some years the design trends don’t resonate but these 2024 interior design trends are hitting us in the feels. They are a refreshing reminder to do you, break rules, and help reduce our environmental impact.
With all design trends, we remind you that they are just trends which always come, go, and change. At Lyndsay Bragg Design we believe there is nothing more important than making choices and including finishes and pieces in your home that bring joy and uplift, support, and inspire you.
And as a last reminder, sustainability isn’t a trend but our ongoing responsibility to make smarter choices to reduce environmental impact.
Brb heading out to buy antiques 😉
